This August, the Macao-Hengqin International Education (University) Town of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin will welcome its first batch of students. If you're arriving from Macao, crossing the border is your first step—here's what you need to know.
The boundary between Hengqin and the Macao SAR is called the "first line," with Hengqin Port serving as the checkpoint. The boundary between Hengqin and the rest of the Chinese mainland is called the "second line."
What should first-time students prepare when arriving?
Nothing extra beyond your normal luggage. If this is your first time entering the Cooperation Zone, and it's within 15 days of when you enrolled, you can bring your personal belongings through duty-free, as long as the quantity is reasonable. Bring your admission letter and proof of accommodation with you. These will help speed up customs clearance.
How much can students bring into Hengqin duty-free?
Your personal luggage and any items mailed to you are duty-free when entering through the first line, as long as they're for personal use, in reasonable quantities, and don't break any rules (for example, no banned or restricted items).
Do I need to declare anything?
Only if you're bringing in something that requires it. You can declare items in advance using the customs mini program on WeChat or Alipay, through the online portal (npc.chinaport.gov.cn), or in person when you arrive.
How can Macao students use the e-channels?
To use the e-channels (fast lanes) at Hengqin Port, Macao students must register in advance with immigration authorities on both the Macao and mainland sides. A registration office is available in the arrival hall at Hengqin Port. The first crossing after registering must still go through a staffed lane for verification; after that, the e-channels can be used.
How much can students bring duty-free from Hengqin into the Chinese mainland?
When crossing the second line from the Cooperation Zone into the Chinese mainland, resident travelers may bring personal goods worth up to 12,000 yuan ($1,700) duty-free.
Can students claim departure tax refunds?
Foreign nationals, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents, are eligible for departure tax refunds if they have stayed in the Chinese mainland for a maximum of 183 consecutive days. A single purchase of 200 yuan or more at a participating tax refund store qualifies for a refund application.
