The Alliance of Guangzhou Sister-City Universities has expanded to 30 members following the admission of three new universities at its annual meeting and presidents' roundtable held from November 10 to 12 in Darwin, Australia.
Applications from Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, the National University of Laos, and Almaty Management University in Kazakhstan were reviewed and approved during the meeting, further strengthening the alliance's global reach.
Founded in 2018 under the initiative of Guangzhou University, the alliance aims to promote cooperation and exchange among universities in Guangzhou's 110 sister cities worldwide.

"The alliance has become an important platform for connecting Guangzhou with its global network of sister cities," said Ouyang Qian, Chair of the Alliance and a representative of Guangzhou University.
Since 2020, the alliance has organized the Urban Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, encouraging students from member universities to propose technological solutions aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The final round of the 2025 Urban Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was held from October 30 to 31 at Durban University of Technology in South Africa. Twenty-five teams from eight member institutions, including Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Medical University, Durban University of Technology, Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology, Western Sydney University, Stellenbosch University, Valencia Polytechnic University, and Aqaba University of Technology, competed on themes of AI empowerment and interdisciplinary innovation. Three projects from Guangzhou University teams received awards.
