Several cities across Guangdong province hosted marathons on Sunday, with crowds of participants running along race tracks past cultural landmarks.
In Huangpu district of Guangzhou, the provincial capital, more than 20,000 runners took part in a marathon that passed through a modern industrial zone in the downtown area and several typical villages.

Local high-tech enterprises specializing in robotics, drones, and optoelectronic displays set up interactive displays along the route.
"During the event, runners can witness dramatic landscape changes along the race track, where farmlands become scenic landscapes, waterways turn into beautiful sights, and villages resemble parks," said Qin Dexing, full-time deputy director of the command office for the project targeting high-quality rural development in Huangpu.

Over the past three years, Huangpu's urban and rural landscape has changed rapidly, with 120 parks having been newly built and several rivers having undergone comprehensive upgrades and renovations.
Concurrently, over 13,000 runners participated in a marathon and half-marathon event in Huizhou, a city in the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The Huizhou route is seen as a cultural and tourism corridor that integrates the history and legacy of renowned Chinese poet Su Dongpo, also known as Su Shi, from the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
Also on Sunday, a marathon event was held in Meizhou in Guangdong's eastern mountains, an area widely known for its Hakka culture.
