Maoming to leverage diverse landscapes to promote orienteering

With the momentum of the 15th National Games, Maoming city in western Guangdong plans to leverage its varied terrains as a strength for orienteering, as announced at a press conference held on November 18 in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong.

At the press conference, Deputy Mayor of Maoming, Wang Xiaohui, announced initiatives including a monthly "Maoming Orienteering Day" and school programs aimed at cultivating young talent to support the city's orienteering ambitions.

By 2028, the city aims to establish a national orienteering training base and host globally influential orienteering events by 2030.

In early May 2025, Maoming hosted the first event of the 15th National Games—the orienteering finals of the mass sports events. A total of 432 athletes from 23 provinces and cities across the country competed on eight elaborately designed routes. This event not only promoted Maoming's brand nationwide as a premier orienteering destination but also bolstered confidence in the city's orienteering ambitions.

Maoming boasts a diverse landscape where mountains meet the sea, with abundant natural resources including over 1,300 square kilometers of mountainous areas, 180 kilometers of coastline, and rich wetland and hilly resources.

Such a multi-faceted blend of landforms makes Maoming a natural venue for orienteering.
