Beyond sports: 15th National Games leaves legacy of regional unity and innovation

The 15th National Games of China concluded on November 21st in Shenzhen, marking the end of a major sporting event jointly hosted for the first time by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. The closing ceremony took place at the Qianhai Happy Theater, featuring a theme that integrated technology with cultural elements.

The games, which opened on November 9th in Guangzhou, showcased impressive athletic performances. Athletes set new records, including surpassing 8 world records and 13 Asian records. Twelve event-winning results even exceeded those of the champions at the Paris Olympics.

Games of Innovation

Technology was a defining feature. The torch relay involved a remotely operated vehicle diving over 1,500 meters to collect a flame source, along with humanoid robots passing the torch. Events utilized smart venues with real-time monitoring systems to enhance operational efficiency and the spectator experience. The approach aimed for a "competition as a test ground" model, promoting the application and post-Games transfer of new technologies to broader urban and industrial uses.

A Showcase of Regional Coordination

The joint hosting by the three regions was a significant exercise in cross-border collaboration. Innovative measures facilitated the smooth movement of people and goods. For example, a road cycling race traversed the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge without requiring competitors to stop for customs checks. A unified command center enabled coordinated management across different jurisdictions. The visual identity, such as the "Marine Silk Road blue" theme, highlighted the region's shared cultural and economic ties.

Engaging the Public

The games emphasized public participation. Around 11,000 civilian athletes took part in community sports events. The volunteer team was massive, with over 30,000 volunteers in Guangdong and Hong Kong's largest-ever volunteer team for a major event. The Games' mascots and licensed products also proved popular with the public.

The next National Games is scheduled for 2029 in Hunan province.
