The 17th Guangdong Provincial Games came to a close on the evening of August 22, with a ceremony held in Maoming. The event celebrated the athletes, volunteers and behind-the-scenes workers who contributed to its success. During the ceremony, the flag was officially passed to Shanwei, the host city of the next Games in 2030.
One venue, two stories
Unlike the opening ceremony, which drew inspiration from Maoming's ancient lychee trees and the city's rich cultural history, the closing ceremony focused on the people and moments that defined the competition.
The same main venue was reused for the closing event, with no major new construction added. Around 40 percent of the performance equipment was reused from the opening ceremony, and the existing sound and stage infrastructure was retained and adapted as needed. The approach reflected the organizers' efforts to keep the event practical and resource-conscious while maintaining a strong visual and theatrical impact.
The shift in stage design also created a narrative transition: from telling the story of Maoming at the opening ceremony to celebrating the wider sporting spirit of Guangdong at the closing ceremony.
A spotlight on the people behind the Games
There were no celebrity headliners at the closing ceremony. Instead, the spotlight was on athletes, students, volunteers and other local participants.
Images on the big screen shifted between young competitors striving for excellence on the field of play and the people working behind the scenes, including volunteers, construction workers, security personnel and medical staff. The message was clear: a sporting event is built not only by those who win medals, but also by many others whose work often goes unnoticed.
Among the returning performers was five-year-old Huang Zijun, a Hung Kuen martial arts inheritor, who had become a popular figure at the opening ceremony. He once again appeared on stage to bring youthful energy to the event.
From Maoming to Shanwei
Shanwei, the next host city, presented a spectacular showcase that introduced its coastal landscapes, local traditions and cultural heritage.
The performance showcased newly choreographed dances, highlighting the intangible cultural heritage of Qianggu dance and Southern-style martial arts, as well as scenes inspired by coastal life. It offered a glimpse of what the city hopes to bring to the next edition of the Games. Images of Shanwei's mountains, lakes, coastline and historic landmarks filled the screen, highlighting the city's distinct blend of natural scenery and everyday coastal life.
As the flag was handed over, the 17th Guangdong Provincial Games officially came to an end. For Maoming, it was the conclusion of a journey that brought together athletes from across the province. For Shanwei, it marked the beginning of a new four-year countdown.
