If you're spending China's National Day holiday in Guangzhou, there's one spot you won't want to miss: Ersha Island. Known as a green oasis tucked in the city center, the island will transform into a stage this October with the launch of the "Ersha Island Four Seasons Concert Series."
The idea is simple and charming: "The island is the stage, everything is a melody." From October through December, more than 120 performances will fill parks, lawns, and cozy cultural spaces across the island. Think of it as Guangzhou's most scenic open-air music venue — where you can catch a concert, sip tea, or stumble upon live music while on a walk.
A creative start to the holiday
From October 1 to 3, the city's famous Xinghai Concert Hall will host special shows featuring its massive pipe organ with 3D light projections that dance with the music. Families can also join hands-on workshops, where kids can build their own mini organs and explore how these grand instruments create their magical sound. On October 5 and 6, the hall will bring back its much-loved children's show, "Little Dandelion," a gentle mix of Cantonese folk tunes and nursery rhymes — perfect for little ones during the festive season.
And that's just the beginning. The concert hall's October lineup also features some serious star power: violinist Gil Shaham, pianist Valentina Lisitsa, and Guzheng artist Su Chang. There are also behind-the-scenes tours, artist talks, and workshops — great for anyone curious about what goes into a world-class performance.
Music spills outdoors
Step outside, and you'll find that the island's lawns and plazas are just as lively. Starting in October, the Ersha Island Outdoor Music Season will unfold on Haishan Street Lawn, featuring everything from jazz and choral music to family shows and dance performances.
For something a little different, head to Wenlifang on October 12, where the New World Chamber Players will bring anime classics like One Piece to life in a playful "Anime Music Concert." On October 17, Guzheng master Su Chang will host a cozy evening at Youran Jiayuan, pairing live zither music with tea — a slow, poetic way to enjoy autumn.
And don't be surprised if you stumble upon music while dining out: local spots like the Rose Garden and Yuyanyan will also host small concerts throughout the season.
What makes this festival special is how it turns Ersha Island into one big cultural playground. Instead of keeping music behind closed doors, the "Four Seasons Concert Series" blends it into everyday life. You might catch a music pop-up around the corner, find a mini concert station in the park, or follow an art-themed walking route across the island.
