Nestled in the southwest of Mudanjiang in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province at 1,100 meters above sea level, Xuexiang—literally "Snow Town"—is famed for its long winter season, which can last nearly seven months, and snow depths reaching two meters. Unique weather patterns create sculpted snow landscapes that transform forests into a magical winter wonderland.

This year, the town receives visitors with upgraded infrastructure and innovative attractions, including the newly opened Bangchuishan Fairy Tale Forest Park. The park combines immersive winter scenes with interactive entertainment, featuring over 400 whimsical snow mushroom sculptures, a life-like recreation of a popular cartoon home, and even four playful penguins that parade daily for visitors. Additional highlights include a 180-meter rainbow sledding slope, warm tea rooms amidst the snow, and petting areas with deer and roe deer, offering enjoyable experiences for all ages.

In south China's Guangdong Province, there is a warm-weather alternative: Gulao Water Town in Heshan, Jiangmen, which showcases a serene network of rivers and lakes, where traditional houses perch along the waterways. With a history spanning over 700 years, Gulao—also known as Weidun Water Town—is celebrated as the "last authentic water town of the Pearl River Delta." Visitors can drift along winding canals on traditional boats, pass under charming bridges, and soak in the scent of lotus flowers.

At night, the town comes alive with illuminated bridges, light-and-shadow performances, and revitalized riverside spaces that offer a unique, immersive cultural experience. Gulao combines centuries of heritage with modern tourism design, making it a peaceful yet vibrant destination for travelers seeking China's living history.
Together, Xuexiang and Gulao offer travelers a striking contrast: one a sparkling winter wonderland in the northeast, the other a tranquil, centuries-old water town in the south—both inviting exploration and unforgettable experiences.
