New geological museum to open at Guangdong's Baishuizhai waterfall

A museum focused on a 170-million-year-old Jurassic volcanic crater is set to open at the Baishuizhai Scenic Spot in Guangzhou's Zengcheng District this May.

The project, developed in partnership with the Jinshan Geological Museum, will use augmented reality (AR) to simulate volcanic eruptions and showcase the region's unique geological history.

The museum will feature volcanic rock samples, granite specimens, and interactive exhibits tracing the area's evolution. AR technology will allow visitors to experience volcanic activity as it occurred millions of years ago. The site centers on one of China's oldest volcanic craters, located beneath the 428.5-meter Baishuizhai Waterfall.

Coinciding with the Chinese New Year, the scenic area will host a six-day festival from February 17 to 22, featuring traditional performances, handicraft workshops, and a light show projected onto the waterfall. Activities include lion dances, character parades, and opportunities for visitors to create paper cuttings or sugar paintings.

Since 2025, the site has undergone upgrades aimed at blending ecological tourism with cultural experiences. The new museum will connect with existing attractions like the 9,999-step "Heavenly Stairs" and Tianchi Lake to form a geo-tourism route.
