Typhoon Tapah made landfall on Monday morning in Taishan, a county-level city in southwestern Guangdong, unleashing severe winds and torrential rain.
The Pearl River Delta and eastern coastal cities bore the brunt of the storm, with widespread heavy downpours and severe gales. Some monitoring stations reported more than 180 millimeters of rainfall within 24 hours, triggering flooding risks. Offshore waters and island stations recorded hurricane-strength gusts, while inland towns also experienced damaging winds.
Tapah is expected to track northwest at around 20–25 km/h, weakening as it moves into neighboring Guangxi by Monday evening and downgrading to a tropical depression. Rainfall and wind intensity are forecast to ease from September 9.
Authorities have urged residents in central and southern Guangdong to remain on high alert for flash floods, landslides, and other secondary hazards. Coastal areas continue to face dangerous sea conditions, with gales expected to persist through Monday before subsiding.
