Warm spell to end as cold front brings rain and chill starting January 31

A brief warm and humid interlude will soon give way to a new wave of cold air, expected to sweep across Guangdong province starting January 31, bringing rainfall and a noticeable drop in temperature.

On January 29, most areas enjoyed ample sunshine, though cloud cover increased in the western and eastern parts. Residents are advised to make the most of the remaining dry hours for laundry and outdoor activities.

From the night of January 29 into January 30, southerly winds will strengthen, leading to warmer and more humid conditions with increasing cloud cover. Northern and eastern regions may experience drizzly and foggy weather, which could reduce visibility. Travelers in these areas should exercise caution.

This warm spell, however, will be short-lived. A fresh cold front is poised to arrive, reaching northern Guangdong around dawn on January 31 before spreading to central, northern, and eventually southern coastal areas by evening.

The cold air will combine with an upper-level trough to produce rainfall across the province. Northern and eastern cities are forecast to see light rain, locally moderate, while other areas will have scattered light showers. The wet weather is expected to be brief, with conditions turning drier and sunnier from February 1 as northerly winds regain control.

Temperature-wise, the cold spell (from January 31 to February 2) will bring a drop in daily average temperatures of 3–6°C. The lowest temperatures are likely on the morning of February 1 or 2. Parts of northern Guangdong, especially northern Shaoguan and northern Qingyuan, may see lows below 5°C, with highs in mountainous areas dropping to 2–4°C. Guangzhou can expect a minimum around 10°C. A gradual warming trend is forecast from February 3.

Detailed Guangdong weather forecast:

January 31: Northern and eastern Guangdong: overcast with light rain, locally moderate; other areas: cloudy to overcast with scattered showers. Light fog or mist possible in some areas. Lows: 7–11°C in northern and northern PRD; 16–20°C in the south; 12–16°C elsewhere.

February 1–2: Eastern coastal areas: scattered showers turning cloudy; most other areas: cloudy to sunny. Lows: 5–8°C in northern and northern PRD; 13–17°C in western Guangdong; 9–12°C elsewhere.

Maritime Winds: From January 31 to February 2, winds over coastal waters are expected to strengthen to force 6–7 with gusts up to 8–9. Maritime operations and transport should remain vigilant.

According to @Guangzhou Weather, the city will be affected by successive weather systems from the night of January 29 to February 1, leading to increased winds, light rain, and a temperature decrease of 4–6°C, resulting in damp and chilly conditions. From February 2, cloud cover will decrease, but mornings and evenings will remain cold with larger daily temperature variations.

Advisories:

Attire: Layered clothing is recommended. Residents in northern Guangdong's mountainous areas should prepare thick down jackets for the low temperatures.

Travel: Reduced visibility due to rain and fog is expected from late January 29 to 30 and again on January 31. Drivers should slow down, avoid using high beams in fog, and plan for potential delays.

Health: Frequent temperature fluctuations increase the risk of colds. Stay hydrated and dress warmly.

Fire safety: With high forest fire risk levels across Guangdong, the public is urged to exercise caution with electricity and fire use at home and to strictly control open flames outdoors.
