According to the Guangdong Meteorological Service, a new tropical storm, named Typhoon Matmo, has formed in the western Pacific and is forecast to affect coastal areas west of the Pearl River Estuary starting the night of October 4th.
The storm developed on the morning of October 2nd, positioned about 680 km east of Manila, Philippines. It is moving northwest at around 20 km/h and is expected to strengthen as it crosses northern Luzon on October 3rd before entering the South China Sea. The typhoon will then track toward waters off western Guangdong and eastern Hainan, according to the Guangdong Meteorological Service.
Weather conditions in Guangdong are expected to remain mostly sunny to cloudy from October 2nd to 4th. However, from the night of October 4th through October 5th, heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast for coastal counties and waters west of the Pearl River Estuary, with some areas likely to experience torrential downpours.
From October 6th to 8th, most of the province will see a return to cloudy or partly sunny conditions, though scattered showers and thunderstorms may still occur in some locations.
In Guangzhou, skies will be partly sunny with highs around 35°C through October 3rd, with cloudier conditions expected starting October 4th.
