A new tropical depression has formed east of the Philippines and is expected to intensify into Typhoon Mitag, the 17th of the year, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to southern China later this week.
Authorities in Guangdong have issued emergency instructions requiring all fishing vessels to return to port and for offshore workers to evacuate by Thursday noon. Coastal tourism sites and ferry routes are on standby for potential closures. Local governments have been advised to enhance monitoring, ensure disaster warnings reach communities promptly, and prepare evacuation plans for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.
From Friday through the weekend, the province's southern counties are forecast to experience heavy rain, with localized downpours.
Weather outlook:
September 17-18: Central and northern Guangdong will remain hot, with highs of 34–37°C. Local thunderstorms are possible.
September 19: Eastern Guangdong is expected to see heavy rain, with some areas facing downpours; scattered thunderstorms are likely elsewhere.
Guangzhou:
September 17: thunderstorms, 24–35°C;
September 18: partly cloudy with isolated showers, 24–35°C;
September 19: thunderstorms, 26–34°C.
