Guangdong is set to experience its first real taste of autumn this week as a strong cold front meets Typhoon Fengshen, driving temperatures down by as much as 6 to 10 degrees Celsius across the province.

As of October 19, Typhoon Fengshen, the 24th of the year, was off the western coast of Luzon, Philippines, with winds reaching tropical storm strength. It is expected to strengthen while moving northwest toward the northern South China Sea before turning southwest toward Hainan early this week.

The approaching storm, combined with a surge of cold air from the north, will bring stronger winds, rainfall, and a noticeable drop in temperature between October 20 and 22.

According to the Guangdong Meteorological Service, coastal areas in the Pearl River Delta and eastern Guangdong will see rain or thunderstorms, with heavier downpours likely on October 21. Minimum temperatures in the northern parts of the province could fall to 14°C–17°C, and even as low as 12°C in some inland areas by midweek. Coastal cities will remain milder, with lows around 18°C–21°C.

In Guangzhou, overcast skies with light to moderate rain are expected on October 21, with temperatures between 17°C and 22°C. Light rain will continue on the 22nd, and temperatures will range from 16°C to 22°C.

Residents are advised to prepare for the cooler conditions, as the combination of typhoon-induced winds and cold air will mark one of the most significant temperature drops of the season so far.
