From 6°C to 21°C: Guangzhou set for significant temperature jump this week

The "Minor Cold" solar term has brought some of the chilliest days so far this season to southern China's Guangdong province, with residents pulling out winter clothing as temperatures dipped into single digits in urban areas.

The cold snap is expected to persist until Thursday, January 8, with weak cold air currents maintaining cool, dry conditions. In the northern parts of the province and high-altitude mountain areas, temperatures could drop below freezing, leading to frost and icy patches.

A gradual warming trend is forecasted starting Friday, January 9. As the influence of the cold air weakens, temperatures are predicted to rise slowly, with maximum temperatures reaching around 20°C by the beginning of the following week. Meteorologists from China Weather indicate that between January 9-11, temperatures across southern China will reach their highest point in recent times, with some areas experiencing almost spring-like conditions.

A notable feature of the current weather is the significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The cold air from Siberia is resulting in clear and dry skies. While sunlight provides warmth during the day, the lack of cloud cover at night allows heat to escape quickly, resulting in cold evenings and mornings.

Provincial Forecast

For January 6, most of Guangdong can expect mainly clear to cloudy skies, with large temperature variations and cold mornings and evenings. The lowest temperatures will be 2-5°C in northern Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta region, and 11-15°C along the western coast. Similar conditions of sunshine, large temperature differences, and cold spells are expected for January 7 and 8.

This month, Guangdong is expected to experience a total of four cold air incursions, with the current one being the second and relatively weak.
