Foshan's Shishan Town celebrates Wing Chun legacy with record-breaking event

The opening ceremony of the 2025 National Intangible Cultural Heritage · Foshan Wing Chun Competition was held in Shishan Town, Nanhai District, Foshan City, South China's Guangdong Province, on September 13. The event brought together 1,300 Wing Chun practitioners from 92 teams across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to exchange skills and carry forward the spirit of Wing Chun in the hometown of Ip Man, one of the most famous kung fu masters (1893-1972), who was known for teaching Wing Chun.

264 participants set a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title with a synchronized Wing Chun display.

Adding to the excitement, 264 participants set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the "Most people training with Wing Chun dummies simultaneously," showcasing a dynamic new model for preserving intangible cultural heritage. Notably, 85% of the challengers were from local martial arts schools and campus clubs.

From September 13 to 14, the 2025 National Intangible Cultural Heritage · Foshan Wing Chun Competition will showcase individual routines, weapon demonstrations, group performances, and traditional Chi Sau (黐手) exhibitions. Complementing the martial arts events are cultural highlights like the "Kung Fu Intangible Cultural Heritage Market" and "Lantern Music LIVE Concert," offering an immersive blend of competition, performance, and public engagement.

This marks the third collaboration between Foshan's Nanhai District and GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™. In 2010, 3,167 Wing Chun enthusiasts set the first record at Shishan's Luocheng Central Square. In 2024, the town claimed another for the "Most people performing a single-legged squat simultaneously." Now, the new Wing Chun dummy training record adds another milestone to Shishan's ongoing efforts to revitalize intangible cultural heritage.
