Guangzhou has launched the country's inaugural museum dedicated to architectural models, offering free public access from late August. The Architecture Model Museum spans 2,100 square meters in the city's Design Hub, featuring over 200 miniature structures that trace regional heritage and futuristic visions—from traditional Lingnan courtyards to experimental urban concepts.
Curated by a team led by He Jingtang of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the museum reinterprets four classic Lingnan spatial prototypes—enclosed Hakka tulou, bamboo-style row houses, courtyard residences, and classical gardens—into immersive galleries. A striking 150-meter-wide window frames views of the Pearl River Delta, integrating the seascape into the exhibition experience. Ecological sensitivity guided construction: low-reflectivity materials and height restrictions (below 60 meters) minimize disruption to migratory birds, while nighttime lighting is dimmed to reduce environmental impact.
Six Zones, Global Dialogues
The exhibits, organized under the acronym MODELS, merge local identity with universal themes:
M-Monument: Displays cultural icons like the World Expo China Pavilion and Yinxu Ruins models.
O-Oasis: Explores the synergy between nature and architecture, exemplified by Shenzhen's sustainable Jianke Tower.
D-Density: Recreates high-density urban living through bamboo-house-inspired installations.
E-Earth: Highlights rural revitalization projects, such as Yangshuo's Sugar House retreat.
L-Link: Hosts rotating exhibitions and academic exchanges.
S-South: Showcases innovations from Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao architects.
Notable pieces include a detailed replica of the Expo Pavilion's roof garden, engraved with solar terms calligraphy, and Meng Jianmin's kinetic "Mammoth One" cinema model.
Interactive Learning for All Ages
Digital tools like QR-code audio guides and tactile installations—including artist Li Xinggang's "Settlement Chair"—allow visitors to engage with design processes. During trials, the museum attracted diverse audiences: architecture students studied the models for hours, while children explored the interactive zones.
Backed by 14 experts, including He Jingtang and former construction minister Song Chunhua, the museum balances scholarly depth with accessibility. It aims to serve as a "second classroom" for professionals while democratizing architectural education for families.
