Practical guide for 2026 Spring Festival travel rush released as peak season begins

The 2026 Spring Festival travel rush—the world's largest annual human migration—began on February 2, with a record 9.5 billion cross-regional passenger trips expected nationwide.

As millions travel by road and rail, what new services are in place this year, and what should passengers know? Here's a practical guide.

For self-driving travel

Toll-free highway period: To facilitate family reunions, a toll-free policy for passenger vehicles with seven seats or fewer will be implemented on nationwide expressways from 00:00 on February 15 (Lunar December 28) to 24:00 on February 23 (Lunar January 7).

EV charging support: By the end of 2025, China had built over 20 million electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities. Specifically, expressway service areas nationwide are equipped with 71,500 EV charging guns. Drivers can check the real-time availability of charging piles at these service areas via the "e路畅通" (Smooth Road) mini-program.

Pre-trip vehicle check: A comprehensive vehicle inspection before long journeys is highly recommended. Drivers should ensure adequate levels of engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid, check battery voltage and charge, and test brake responsiveness. Tire conditions, such as bulges or excessive tread wear, should also be examined, with replacements made if necessary to ensure driving safety.

For railway travel

New lines and stations debut: This year's travel rush sees 22 new railway lines totaling 3,109 kilometers, including Xi'an-Yan'an, Baotou-Yinchuan, Guangzhou-Zhanjiang, and Chongqing-Qianjiang routes, along with over 50 new passenger stations, making their Spring Festival debut. More than 560 additional or optimized passenger trains have been arranged to serve travelers along these routes.

Nearly 1,000 night high-speed trains: Nearly 1,000 night high-speed trains will operate on major corridors like Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Shanghai, and Shanghai-Kunming during the rush to meet surging demand. Tickets for these additional night trains go on sale five days before departure.

Free refund for mistaken purchases within time limit: For tickets purchased via the official 12306 platform with a travel date of February 2 or later, passengers can receive a free refund if they cancel the mistakenly bought ticket within 30 minutes of payment and at least four hours before the scheduled departure.

Expanded pet check-in service pilot: Since January 28, China Railway has significantly expanded its pilot program for pet check-in services on selected high-speed trains. The service is now available at 67 additional stations, including Harbin, Shenyang, and Taiyuan, bringing the total number of participating stations to 110 nationwide. The number of train services offering this option has also increased from 54 to 170.

Beware of ticket scams: Passengers are urged to use only official platforms (12306 website/app) for ticket purchases and information. Do not click on unknown links, readily trust unsolicited customer service calls, or share personal information with strangers. Third-party software claiming "priority ticket purchasing" not only fails to secure tickets but also poses risks such as virus infection and financial loss. Avoid downloading any unofficial or suspicious "ticket-booking" apps.

For air travel

Increased flight capacity: Airlines are focusing on adding flights to major hub airports and popular tourist destinations. It is estimated that an average of 19,400 flights will be operated daily during the period, marking a 5% year-on-year increase.

Enhanced connectivity & convenience: Airlines are encouraged to further develop their hub-and-spoke and network-interconnection service systems. Efforts include actively promoting domestic connecting flight products and express air routes. These initiatives aim to allow more passengers to enjoy convenient transfer services, such as one-time check-in at their origin airport and luggage checked through to their final destination.

Improved accessibility services: Airlines and airports are urged to optimize facilities and services for elderly passengers and those with disabilities. This includes providing guided assistance, dedicated rest areas, and priority seating in departure lounges for senior travelers.

Support for winter sports enthusiasts: For passengers traveling with skiing or snowboarding equipment, airlines are encouraged to streamline the check-in process for such gear. Major airports in popular winter sports destinations will increase the number of changing areas. Services like rental, sales, and shipping of cold-weather clothing and thermal gear will also be available.

Remember "The three earlies" for a smooth flight

Check in early: Plan your journey to the airport with ample time, allowing for check-in and baggage drop-off.

Prepare documents early: Have your boarding pass, ID card, and other necessary travel documents ready in advance.

Handle restricted items early: Ensure liquids in carry-on luggage comply with quantity regulations and that power banks have clear, legitimate safety certification markings. Dispose of any prohibited items beforehand to expedite security screening.
