Germany's Tölz Boys' Choir to perform in Guangzhou this August

After years of absence, the world-renowned German boys' choir, the Tölzer Knabenchor, has once again embarked on a tour of China. On August 10, they will make a highly anticipated appearance at Xinghai Concert Hall in Guangzhou, presenting a musical feast infused with diverse cultural elements.

This world-class choir—Grammy-nominated—has captivated legendary conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein with its angelic purity. Universally acclaimed as the finest interpreters of the Three Boys in Mozart's The Magic Flute, the choir will perform signature selections from this iconic opera, German folk songs, and even a Chinese version of Dreaming of Home and Mother, showcasing the celestial beauty of boy soprano voices.

About the Tölzer Knabenchor

The Tölzer Knabenchor (Tölz Boys' Choir) is a German boys’ choir founded by Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden in 1956 in Bavaria, Germany. Since its inception, the choir has been based in Munich and currently comprises around 170 singers. It has gained international acclaim for its exceptional programming and conducting, receiving a Grammy Award nomination in 1982.

Each year, they perform at around 150 concerts and opera productions worldwide—including Japan, China, Israel, Poland, and the United States. Since the 1970s, they have performed over 2,000 concerts and been invited to perform for numerous heads of state and royalty.

The choir's repertoire is remarkably diverse, covering vocal works from the Middle Ages to the modern era, such as folk songs and pastoral ballads. They also perform a wide range of Baroque and Classical works, both in solo and choral arrangements.

In 1964, led by founder and conductor Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, the choir ventured into the operatic field to integrate boys' solo voices into opera performances. The result was a fresh, youthful energy that redefined tradition. As Neue Zürcher Zeitung once commented, "The innate talent combined with exclusive individualized training makes every member a distinguished soloist."
