Mix of scorching heat and sudden thunderstorms hits Guangdong this summer

Guangdong Province is currently experiencing a typical summer weather pattern characterized by intense heat, sporadic thunderstorms, and high humidity. Recent days have seen temperatures soar, followed by sudden rainfall, creating a "steaming" effect under the influence of the subtropical high.

On July 14, most cities in Guangdong recorded higher daytime temperatures compared to July 13. Puning in Jieyang City registered the province's highest temperature at 36.3°C. Between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM on July 14, seven towns and subdistricts experienced heavy downpours exceeding 50 mm. In the evening, intense thunderstorms swept through the Pearl River Delta area.

Such thunderstorms are typical of Guangdong's summers, often occurring in the afternoon with localized intensity but brief duration. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and seek shelter promptly when storms arise.

Guangdong will continue to experience a mix of heat and rain. The provincial meteorological bureau predicts:

July 15: Cloudy skies with scattered thunderstorms and heavy to extreme rainfall (50–100 mm). Most cities will see temperatures between 34°C and 37°C, accompanied by gusty winds (level 8) during storms.

July 16–17: Partly cloudy to sunny conditions, with isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from 27°C to 36°C across the province.

Guangzhou outlook

July 15: Cloudy to sunny, with scattered showers. 27°C–35°C.

July 16: Cloudy to sunny, with showers. 27°C–36°C.

July 17: Cloudy. 27°C–36°C.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak heat, and carry rain gear for sudden downpours. The combination of heat and humidity will persist, making caution essential.
