Guangzhou Metro tries out keeping turnstiles always open

Guangzhou Metro is piloting always-open turnstiles at Line 11’s Huajing Road Station, allowing passengers to tap their ticket, card, or scan a QR code and walk through without waiting for the turnstile doors to close and reopen.

After tapping a card or scanning a code, passengers can pass through directly once the screen displays a green arrow or the green indicator light on top of the gate lights up. When passengers are queuing, the gates will remain open, enabling continuous passage without interruption.

However, if an invalid ticket is detected or someone tries to pass through directly, the gates will automatically close. The passenger must exit the lane and re-tap his/her ticket or seek staff assistance. The gates will also close automatically to prevent reverse entry, such as attempting to enter through the exit.

This mode aims to reduce the time passengers spend, improve flow efficiency during normal operations, and minimize mechanical wear, thereby increasing the reliability of the equipment.

The pilot will be evaluated based on peak-hour performance and overall throughput. Authorities will analyze the results and determine whether to expand the initiative.
