UK teacher captures Shenzhen's transformation into global home

A five-minute documentary, "Shenzhen: Meet the Local," has captivated global audiences, spotlighting the city's transformation through the eyes of British expatriate Martin Crozier. Premiered on Euronews, it reached 23.2 million unique viewers worldwide, with over 44 million total exposures.

The film opens at dawn in Shenzhen Talent Park, where Martin joins runners from Germany, South Africa, South Korea, and China for the weekly "Park Run." As a math teacher at Harrow International School, Martin's perspective anchors the narrative. "In 1980, this was a map-hidden fishing village," he says. "Today, it's where my daughter safely scooters home at night."

Scenes unfold organically: families stroll along Shekou's breezy waterfront; diverse friends debate math over dinner at Tequila Coyotes; a drone delivers a steaming latte. Martin marvels at Shenzhen's pace, noting that they shifted a road four meters overnight.

Beyond showcasing innovation, the film reveals a sense of belonging. Martin's running group expands; his math salon grows from a café corner to a rooftop gathering. His wife, Allison, notes, "In the UK, we drive everywhere. Here, we walk." Fourteen-year-old Eleanor adds simply, "It's freer. Night walks feel safe and fun."

Strategically released across platforms—including a dedicated website and social clips—the documentary has gained traction, with YouTube views nearing 40,000. Plans are underway for distribution to 100 global media outlets and a relaunch for Shenzhen's 45th anniversary in August.

In just 45 years, Shenzhen has evolved from a village into a metropolis embracing global citizens. Martin, here for two years, embodies its ethos: "Shenzhen gives people worldwide a shared identity—Shenzhener."
