China has unveiled what researchers say is the world's first multi-modal brain-computer interface designed to influence and monitor dreams, highlighting a new frontier in sleep science.
The device, named Menglin (“梦邻”, Dream Neighbor), was launched on July 27 at the Sleep Neuro-regulation & Brain-Computer Interface Innovation Forum in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. Developed jointly by the Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Science and Technology and medical technology firm Suiren (“燧人”), the pillow-shaped gadget combines brainwave monitoring with artificial intelligence to provide real-time feedback during sleep.
Unlike traditional sleep trackers, Menglin actively intervenes when irregular patterns are detected. For example, if the system identifies signals linked to nightmares, it delivers non-invasive neural stimulation to help the sleeper remain calm and extend periods of deep rest. It also simulates natural light and sound for a gentler waking experience and produces detailed sleep reports via a companion app, including emotional analysis and personalized advice.
Researchers behind the project say the product overcomes long-standing challenges of stable signal collection, miniaturization, and ease of use. They expect the device to be priced similarly to a mid-to-high-end smartphone, with mass production scheduled for late August.
At the forum, experts from hospitals and universities in the mainland and Macao discussed how brain-computer interface technology could reshape the treatment of sleep disorders and anxiety, shifting from symptom-based management to personalized, proactive health care.
