On the afternoon of August 5, a delegation from the Translation and Interpretation Programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) joined a forum on international communication and translation in Guangzhou with South, the international communication platform of Nanfang Media Group.
The forum was held at Hao Yi Tianhe in the Liede International Neighborhood, one of the International Community Information Service Centers of INFO Guangdong, Guangdong's one-stop information and news platform for expatriates.
Ouyang Yan, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of South, introduced South's recent developments and innovations in global outreach. "We look forward to working with young people from Singapore to let the world hear the shared voices of Guangdong and Singapore," Ouyang said.
Associate Professor Susan Xu, Head of the Translation and Interpretation Programme at SUSS, shared insights on how cultural differences shape international communication. Editors and journalists from South also shared their experiences in translation and localization, drawing from their practices in multilingual media and cross-cultural reporting.
Olivia Chen, a visiting student studying translation part-time while working in advertising, said, "The experiences shared by South were practical and very eye-opening. I learned how translation works in an industry I had never entered."
The event is part of the university's study tour from August 3 to 9, during which the delegation will visit various places in Guangzhou and attend multiple seminars on translation to learn about the city's language services sector and its latest trends and practices.
"We've seen the rapid rise of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in recent years, from major infrastructure projects like the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to cutting-edge tech industries," said Prof. Xu. "We hope this visit to Guangzhou can broaden our students' perspectives and inspire new ideas."
