The Shenzhen-original dance drama Wing Chun is touring Guangdong from September to November. After its September performances in Shenzhen, the tour will continue in Guangzhou, Zhongshan, and Heyuan.
The dance drama Wing Chun follows Master Ip Man's journey to Hong Kong in 1949 to teach disciples, while decades later, a film crew seeks to capture his story. By weaving the two timelines together, it contrasts the man with the myth surrounding him, revealing the human spirit behind the martial arts icon.
Artistically, the production is grounded in Lingnan culture by transforming the close-range techniques of Wing Chun, a martial art originating from Guangdong, into dynamic choreography while also drawing on movements from other Chinese martial arts like Tai Chi, Baguazhang, and elements of classical and modern dance.
The production also features Gambiered Canton Gauze (Xiangyunsha), a Lingnan textile that not only adds elegance to the costumes but, with its intricate dyeing process, becomes part of the story itself.
Renowned choreographers Han Zhen and Zhou Liya, widely recognized as leading figures in China's contemporary dance scene, are collaborating on Wing Chun.
Since its premiere, Wing Chun has captivated audiences worldwide with its striking choreography, rich cultural themes, and polished performances. The production has been staged more than 260 times in 51 cities and 62 theaters worldwide, including Singapore, Paris, London, and Moscow.
From December 16, 2025, to January 4, 2026, the drama will hold a 20-show residency in Toronto, Canada.
